From what i know of them it depends on the owner, & they aren't good with kids.

I like this site- it's about dogs known as "pig dogs" without the hunting part!

yes it does depend on the owner - realisticly all dogs should not be left alone with dogs regardless of breed.
my dogs are good with kids and the majority of pig dogs are, we cannot afford for them not to be good around kids/family. the minority of irresponsible owners and media have destroyed the pig dogs reputation..
thanks for your reply

a pig dog can be any breed of dog used for hunting pigs. They could be pitbulls, cattle dogs, mastiffs, pointers, beagles and any cross or purebreed in between.
There is no such thing as a pure bred pigdog, you'll never find one that looks the same as another.
I find that hunting dogs are usually good with other dogs and children because they know what their job is, to hunt.
My 20 year old dog is a pig dog. She's a bull terrier cross with a labrador and she's never bitten anyone or even showed aggression to anyone.
My other 4 year old dog is a pitbull cross ridgeback and he's a pigdog too. Never bitten anyone either nor is he likely to.

Poor man.
I can see how they'd make the mistake between a pig and an elderly italian man.
Stupid humans.

This is a wierd question. For starters, there is no such thing as a pig-dog. The term is usually applied to pit-bulls or staffies or the like.
A dog who has been trained to take down a pig would not make a good pet.
I would not have dog with that type of training around children. I was recently reading on the website of a breeder who supplies Qld Mastiffs for hunting & guard dogs. They don't suggest trained attack dogs as pets, although the dogs which have not been trained that way may be. But then, they are not 'pig dogs'.
Few dogs are really bad, most unacceptable behaviours in dogs stem from the owners.
Judging from the threads I read on that website (quite a few actually) the question should be either: should pig hunters be allowed dogs or should be hunters be allowed around children.
This thread was simply baiting. You make a great deal off assumptions about people you've never met. I can assure you I know a lot more hunters than you know vegetarians.

Boxers also make good pig dogs georgygirl.
Joanne, I would disagree with you. A good hunting dog is a stable and trustworthy animal for the most part.
Just because it has been trained and encouraged to bring a pig to a halt doesn't mean it's untrustworthy.
How many family pets will kill and chase cats and chickens but would never bite their human or any other human?
Dogs are all hunters by nature. A dog is never happier than when it's in the bush chasing down prey.
Even a silky terrier and a chiahuahua (spelling?) will hunt.

wow, I'm confused now. I remember as a kid that the neighbours had dogs that were referred to as pigdogs and I really thought they were a breed of their own. I remember the shape of their face/eyes and nose and it was rather distinct. Kinda like this http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a175/shaggyblog/6da04531.jpg
My memories look nothing like a pitty or staffy..
We have a staffy, he's about 10 months old and this is his third home, not through any fault of his own, just circumstance. I trust him with my kids 100%.. with my mums cats.. not too sure, but they usually start the mayhem.

Jodi, you're probably thinking about the english bullterrier. Were they white usually with a banana shaped head and piggy eyes and stocky build?
Because of the shape of their heads and their eyes the english bully was given the nckname 'pigdog' and that nickname took off.
In pig hunting circles any dog or mix of dog that is used to hunt pigs is a pigdog.

Well to answer the original question, I think any breed of dogs can be a good choice of "pet".  I think it depends a lot on the animals upbringing and of course breeding.. but not breed.

Georgygirl, I used to have a boxer male and he was into everything. He was a rambunctious bonehead and I loved him.
He was also a great pigdog. Boxers are fast and hard dogs. They've got everything needed to be a good pigger.
I think if your boxer is soft and timid it's more the exception than the rule.

Boxers are generally a gentle dog than a non gentle dog.  One of their original jobs was guide dogs.  They're great baby sitters too.

boxers are a very popular choice with pig hunters - a keen nose, stamina and heart.
generally all dogs are gentle and quiet..
any dog will hunt - it is an inbuilt instinct.
