Hey all

I've been posting here a little already and found this thread so here I am !

My name is Peter and I've been a committed vegetarian for just over a year now (previously I used to eat fish, prawns and squid).

I'm in Perth and am just starting to experiment with different foods and ideas regarding my diet, including substitutions that are wholly vegan.

I'm really enjoying the posts, the people and information on this forum and hope I can contribute something positive as well !

Hello everyone! My name is Corinne ,I am 22 and have been veg for a year. It all started with my refusal to eat lamb and then veal in my teenage years. I study nutrition at college, and live on Brisbanes southside.I am currently considering cutting out dairy and eggs...this is a big thing for me as my favourite dessert is cheesecake :-( But I feel that the animal suffering I prevent will be worth it :-) So hopefully, I will stick with it!!! We will see... I personally only know one vegan, no other veges and come from a meat eating family, and it wasn't until I left home that I made the decision to be veg, as I could cook whatever I want!

Hello Corinne and a big Welcome to you - along with Congratulations on your decision to go vegan.   Now you'll know lots of vegans!!  And as you live in the Brisbane area you will have to start joining us at our dinners - then you'll see just how many of us there are around the place.  And miss cheesecake??!  You aren't missing a thing my girl!!!  Just wait 'til you try a vegan cheesecake!  You will have to get yourself a copy of The Uncheese Cookbook - all sorts of cheesy recipes and fabulous cheesecakes.  Try Tofutti cream cheese!  but this book will give you recipes for all sorts of things you thought you might miss.  You won't miss a thing.  I'm out of them at the moment but expecting more in about a week.

If you would like one of our free Information Packs which has lots of nutrition info and recipes etc, and lots of reasons why you won't ever want to eat eggs or dairy again - (there's a video somewhere on this forum which shows you what happens to day old male chicks - and it doesn't matter whether your eggs are battery, barn or free range, the result is the same) - send your postal address to the office and I'll have one right off to you and you'll be a staunch vegan in two seconds flat.

Hi out there! I am new to all this but wanted to enquire for my 13y.o vegetarian daughter. She has been vego for 3 odd years now with my full support but as she has recently had blood tests showing her iron levels down to 13. I am now concerned she is not taking in enough iron. She takes spirulina twice a day in powder form as she has an oesophagitis problem and can't swallow pills and is also asthmatic. Any suggestions? Many thanks....

I believe Floradix is very good (it's a supplement and maybe I think is drinkable): http://www.natureschild.com.au/products/Floradix_Herbal_Iron_Supplement/495/1

Otherwise, you can try upping the iron in her diet. There's a table here that's very good: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm

Best of luck! I've always had problems with iron :(

Thanks for that info....the list of iron web site was very informative (I am amazed how much has to be eaten to get the daily dose of iron!) and will look into the liquid suppliment when I am next in town! Many thanks and Blessings!

Hi I've been reading these posts for a little while now and I thought I'd join in. I've been vegetarian for almost 6yrs now and starting to make the trasition to veganism. I know hardly any vegetarian or vegans, so its very refreshing reading peoples compassionate point of views on this form and I hope to participate more in the future.

Hi! I'm not really new but have never actually introduced myself.
I'm on the north side of Brisbane. I've been vegan for a little over 2 years now. I grew up in a little village in the Snowy Mountains in NSW, my family are in WIRES so I had been caring for native animals for years before I moved to Brisbane, we were considered a little alternative... not much respect for kangaroos etc. where I'm from! But I think growing up alongside so many animals was one of the major influences in my decision to become vegan.
Anyway, I'm probably boring you all! Just thought it was about time I said hi!   :)

Hi all :)

My name is Krystal. I am 24 and I have only been a Vegan for 3 weeks now :) I have a lot to learn I guess, but I love it and I feel so much better!

I would like to make some new friends on this forum that support me being Vegan, as I don’t have ANY vegan or even Vegetarian friends so things are annoying sometimes  :(

I have gone cold turkey so to speak haha! Straight from red meat and red wine to a veggie lover!
I had been thinking about going vegan for a while form bits and pieces I have heard/researched...then my parents showed me a video called "eating" from the Rave Diet website and that was it for me. All I had wondered about real health was confirmed and so being a Vegan it is for me! :)

I am finding things a bit overwhelming as I have received so much crap already for choosing a vegan lifestyle it is insane! I guess it is to be expected to some degree….but what annoys me most is people do jack all research about Vegan lifestyle, yet they all have an opinion on why I SHOULDN'T be vegan! :(

So as I said, I have only been Vegan for 3 weeks, so you will have to be patient with me as I still have a lot to learn. At the moment I am just doing the basics I know, staying away form meat and dairy :)

Cheers, Krystal.
