Hi All

Am planning a pregnancy for later this year and am wanting to start building up on foliate and all the other vital nutrients for bub, but the only pregnancy supplements I can find at the health food store contain fish oil.  Can anyone suggest a brand of vegetarian pregnancy vitamins?

VV magazine just did an epic article going in-depth into pregnancy nutrition - both good eating habits and also the recommended daily intake (via specified foods and/or suppliments) during different times (prior to prego, first trimester etc).  You might find it of interest.

It's on page 41 of the current edition (No. 34).  It doesn't suggest brands (which makes me respect it even more!), but it looks to be a good guide.  You can buy it at organic shops (like the Green Grocer in West End) or via http://www.veganic.net/currentissue.htm

Have been told on a natural parenting and homebirth site that elivit is vegetarian. I really don't think it is but I have contacted the company and am awaiting their reply , hopefully tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Well they got back to me sooner than I thought they would.  Unfortunately it's not vegetarian.

I've looked up suppliers for the Deva brand...there is only one suppler in Australia...and they charge twice what it would cost me to order it from one of the american stores.  (That's just plain crazy in my book.)

Obviously if push comes to shove I will order from america...but I would prefer to buy local if I can.

Any other ideas?

Oh...and has anyone used this one before?  Deva I mean. :)

I don't know of one unfortunately. I kind of got guilted into using Elevit but I knew it wasn't because the EFAs come from fish grrr.

Hi there, during my pregnancy I took spirulina and my check ups and blood tests throughout my preganancy were all fine. You may need to take individual vitamins rather than a multivitamin for your folate etc. I am not sure where you live but if you are anywhere near Lutwyche there is a lovely vegetarian couple who are vegetarian naturopaths who work in the health section of the Terry White chemist at Lutwyche  shopping centre at lutwyche.
They were very helpful with giving me advice throughout my pregnancy.You can call the chemist if you are too far away to go there and just ask for some advice. Hope this helps
